Fremantle Dockers star Hayden Young has opened up about a preseason injury scare, the team’s rigorous training sessions, and his aspirations to secure an AFL premiership with the Dockers.
Young revealed he faced a minor setback before Christmas, describing it as a “hiccup” that initially caused concern.
“I had a little hiccup pre-Chrissy, which was frustrating,” Young said. “It was tricky because when I did it the first time, I didn’t know. I didn’t think I’d broken it; I just thought I had a corkie. This time was a little bit scary. I thought, ‘Oh, it feels similar.’”
Despite the scare, Young is optimistic about his recovery.
“I’ve still got a bit of work to do to get back to match fitness, but I’m pretty happy I’m back out there running around,” he said.
Young also reflected on the intensity of Fremantle’s preseason training, commending teammate Luke Ryan for his resilience after a heavy collision during a session.
“Luke is all good. He’s pretty used to going back with the flight. He copped a heavy knock today, but he seems alright, so that’s a good sign,” Young shared. “We want the intensity to be up. We’ve had a really fit list throughout the whole preseason, so everyone’s just going really hard at the moment, which is great—bodies flying around.”
Looking ahead, Young is committed to Fremantle and dreams of holding up the AFL Premiership Cup with the team.
“I want to be one of the first players to hold up the cup with my teammates and share it with them,” Young said. “Going to another club and chasing that, you wouldn’t get the same satisfaction as sharing that experience with people I’ve been with the last five years.”
