John Longmire steps down, Dean Cox named Swans coach

John Longmire, the longest-serving coach in Sydney Swans history, has announced he will step aside from his senior coaching role at the end of the 2024 season. Longmire, who led the Swans to their 2012 Premiership and five grand final appearances, will transition to a new role as Executive Director – Club Performance in 2025.

The Swans have confirmed Dean Cox as their next senior coach, with an initial four-year contract starting in 2025. Cox, who has been part of the Swans’ coaching team since 2017, brings a decade of experience, including a stint with the West Coast Eagles.

Sydney Swans Chairman Andrew Pridham lauded Longmire’s contributions, calling him “instrumental” in the club’s sustained success over two decades.

“John has been a transformative figure for our club, with his leadership and vision ensuring consistent competitiveness in a challenging AFL landscape,” Pridham said.

Longmire expressed confidence in Cox’s readiness to take on the role. “Dean has been an outstanding mentor and coach, and I’m excited to see him lead this club into the future.”

Dean Cox acknowledged the weight of responsibility, saying, “It’s an honour to take over from John. I look forward to continuing the Swans’ legacy of success.”
