AFLW club membership hits record high

The AFL has set a new AFLW club membership record, announcing 76,356 members in 2024. This surpasses the previous high of 75,568 from 2022 (Season 7) and represents a 4.2% increase year-on-year from 2023.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon commended fans for their continued support, highlighting the milestone as a reflection of the league’s progress.

“In only our ninth season of the NAB AFLW competition, we’ve seen the league go from strength to strength and are delighted that fans have continued to cement their support of the competition by becoming members of their clubs to reach this record number,” Dillon said.

“On behalf of the AFL, we thank all club members and fans who attended an AFLW game this season and showed their support for their clubs.”

The membership milestone was accompanied by record growth across nine clubs: Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton, Geelong, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Richmond, and West Coast Eagles. Gold Coast SUNS and Sydney Swans also reported year-on-year membership increases, with Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton, Geelong, Gold Coast SUNS, and North Melbourne achieving over 10% growth.

In addition to membership growth, the 2024 AFLW season saw a rise in average match attendance, up 2.1% from 2023. Total attendance across the home-and-away season reached 263,452.

Dillon noted that the upcoming NAB AFLW Grand Final will make history as the first-ever to be played under lights, with a sell-out crowd anticipated.

“The excitement for this week’s Grand Final is unprecedented, and we’re thrilled to see the passion of fans driving the success of the AFLW,” he said.

The AFLW membership record follows the announcement of a record 2024 AFL club membership total earlier this year, further emphasising the competition’s growing appeal.
