Boxing Day Test set to light up the MCG

Melbourne’s iconic NRMA Insurance Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will feature Australia taking on India in the fourth Test of the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. The event promises to be a cauldron of colour and sound, celebrating the rich connections between the two nations.

Cricket Australia, in partnership with the Victorian Government, is set to deliver a vibrant Summer Festival in Yarra Park across the first three days of the Test (26–28 December 2024). This free-entry festival will showcase food, music, art, cricket, and community, enhancing the experience for fans.

Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said, “The Boxing Day Test at the MCG is globally recognised as one of the most iconic fixtures on the cricket calendar. The rivalry between Australia and India just gets bigger and bigger, and we can’t wait to see the MCG full on Boxing Day.”

The last time India toured with full capacity at the MCG was in 2018, attracting over 176,000 fans. This year, ticket sales have already doubled compared to the same stage in 2018, with a sell-out crowd expected for day one. Fans are encouraged to secure tickets early via cricket.com.au/tickets.

Beyond the Boxing Day Test, Melbourne’s cricket calendar includes men’s KFC Big Bash League games and a historic CommBank Women’s Ashes Test between Australia and England from 30 January to 2 February 2025. This will be the first women’s Test at the MCG since 1949 and the first day-night Test for the Australian women’s team at the venue.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos highlighted the economic and cultural significance, saying, “The Boxing Day Test will celebrate our state’s strong relationship with India, providing a huge boost to our local economy and showcasing Melbourne to passionate cricket fans from around the world.”
